Enclosure heaters:
anti-condensation & frost protection

The underestimated cause of damage in an electrical enclosure is not heat but water: cooling at night makes moisture condense on sheet metal and electronics — corrosion and leakage currents follow. HGE anti-condensation heaters with thermostat (50–400 W) keep the dew point at bay, mounted and wired ex works.

When an electrical enclosure needs a heater

Whenever the air in the enclosure can become colder than its dew point: unheated halls at the weekend, outdoor enclosures after clear nights, plants shut down in winter. The result is condensation on sheet metal, terminals and circuit boards — and from that corrosion, leakage currents, failures. An enclosure heater with thermostat or hygrostat keeps the internal temperature above the dew point and the enclosure dry; for frost-sensitive equipment it also provides frost protection.

ZPAS designs the heater together with the cooling as one thermal management system — the heating load comes from the cooling & heating capacity calculator to IEC 60890, and it is mounted ex works.

Typical applications

❄️

Frost protection in winter

The heater maintains the minimum temperature for electronics, displays and batteries — typically a +5 °C target in an outdoor enclosure.

💧

Condensation protection

Thermostat- or hygrostat-controlled against falling below the dew point — the most common application, indoors as well.

🏜️

Standstill heating

Plants with shutdown phases (weekend, season) stay dry until they start up again.

🌦️

Outdoor enclosures

Standard in SZD thermal management: heating plus cooling, controlled together.

🖥️

Outdoor server racks

The outdoor server rack combines heating with a heat exchanger or air conditioner.

Measurement & control technology

Sensitive measurement and control technology needs stable temperatures — the heater smooths out day-night cycles.

Requirements — clearly classified

HGE range: 50–400 W

Compact resistance heaters for the DIN rail, 230 V — graded by enclosure size and heating load, also several per enclosure.

Controlled, not permanently hot

Thermostat (temperature) or hygrostat (humidity) switch as required — saves energy and prevents hotspots.

Correctly positioned

At the bottom of the enclosure, with free convection upwards — ZPAS implements position and clearances in the design ex works.

One thermal management system

Heating and cooling are sized together to IEC 60890 — no units working against each other.

Why ZPAS

Because condensation damage creeps in and ends up expensive: the heater is the cheapest component in the enclosure — if it is planned, mounted and wired in from the start. Determine the heating load in two minutes with the calculator; ZPAS takes care of the rest ex works.

Frequently asked questions

How much heating capacity does my electrical enclosure need?

That depends on the enclosure surface area, the installation site and the target internal temperature. The free ZPAS cooling & heating capacity calculator determines the heating load to IEC 60890 in seconds — typically 50–400 W (HGE range) covers one enclosure; large outdoor enclosures use several units.

Thermostat or hygrostat — which is better?

Against frost, a thermostat is sufficient (it switches according to temperature). Against condensation, the hygrostat is more precise: it switches according to relative humidity and only heats when there is a risk of falling below the dew point — which saves energy. Causes and remedies for condensation: condensation in electrical enclosures.

Does an enclosure need heating AND cooling?

Outdoors, almost always: cooling during the day against sun and power loss, heating at night and in winter against condensation and frost. ZPAS designs both as one thermal management system so that the units do not work against each other.

Is the heater supplied ready-mounted?

Yes — position, fixing, wiring to terminals and controller are implemented ex works; the enclosure arrives ready for connection.
