Filter fan, heat exchanger or cooling unit — the comparison
The right enclosure cooling depends on two questions: how much power loss is generated in the enclosure — and is the ambient air cooler or warmer than the permissible internal temperature? The overview classifies the four unit families; the guide to selecting a cooling unit explains the sizing in detail.
| Unit | Principle | Capacity | When it is the right choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Filter fan LV + GV | Filtered room air flows through the enclosure | 42–610 m³/h | Ambient cooler than the target internal temperature, clean air — the most economical and most energy-efficient solution (IP 54) |
| Air/air heat exchanger | Closed circuit, heat dissipated via the exchanger profile | sized for each enclosure | Ambient cooler, but air dusty/oily — the degree of protection is fully maintained |
| Compressor cooling unit CVE / ETE | Active refrigeration, side-mounted (CVE) or roof-mounted (ETE) | 310–6,000 W | Ambient warmer than the target or high heat load — cools independently of the room temperature |
| Air/water heat exchanger CNW | Cooling via an existing chilled-water network | 900–3,000 W | Chilled water available (industrial plant) — quiet, efficient, low-maintenance |
| Heater HGE | Resistance heater with thermostat | 50–400 W | Against condensation and frost — standard for outdoor and unheated locations |
Factory-fitted: enclosure and cooling unit from a single source
The difference to buying the unit from a component dealer: ZPAS supplies the electrical enclosure with cooling unit as a tested unit — the degree of protection is maintained and the warranty comes from a single source.

Air conditioners for outdoor use: CVO and AHP heat pump
Outdoors, the cooling works against sun, dust and frost at the same time. For the SZD outdoor enclosures, ZPAS supplies its own outdoor range:
- Outdoor air conditioners CVO — 550–5,800 W, for door and side mounting, sealed to match the IP rating
- AHP Air Heat Pump — the patented heat pump cools and heats in one unit, with a COP of up to 5
- Air/air heat exchangers and filter fans for moderate locations
- Heaters with thermostat against condensation and frost
Typical field of application: electrical enclosures for automation & instrumentation and control — this is where the heat load arises that is dissipated here.
Frequently asked questions — enclosure cooling units
Which cooling unit suits which heat load?
Ambient cooler than the target: filter fan LV (42–610 m³/h) or, with dirty air, an air/air heat exchanger. Ambient warmer: compressor cooling unit CVE/ETE (310–6,000 W). With a chilled-water network: CNW (900–3,000 W). The guide explains the selection in detail.
Does ZPAS supply the electrical enclosure with the cooling unit already fitted?
Yes — sizing, CNC cut-out, mounting, wiring and function test ex works. The degree of protection is maintained, and there is one contact person for enclosure and climate control.
How do I calculate the required cooling capacity?
With the free cooling capacity calculator: enter dimensions, power loss and temperatures — a guide value to IEC 60890 plus a unit recommendation in seconds.
Does an outdoor electrical enclosure also need a heater?
Usually yes: heaters HGE (50–400 W) with thermostat prevent condensation when temperatures drop at night and frost in winter — in outdoor thermal management, cooling and heating belong together.
Which refrigerant do the cooling units use?
The Protherm cooling units from Cosmotec use R513A, a refrigerant with a low global warming potential (GWP); for certain applications, versions with R134a are available.
What happens to the cooling unit’s condensate?
From size CVE11 upwards, the Protherm units evaporate their condensate themselves: it collects in a container through which the compressor’s hot pipe is routed. More on moisture in the enclosure in the guide condensation in electrical enclosures.
Is a fan or heat exchanger enough instead of a cooling unit?
As long as the surroundings are cooler than the permissible internal temperature, often yes — and at significantly lower cost. Which solution fits when is shown on the filter fans & heat exchangers page.
