Outdoor enclosures for
water management

Pumping stations, waterworks and treatment plants need process technology on site — outdoors, with condensation and an aggressive atmosphere. ZPAS manufactures corrosion-resistant outdoor enclosures: aluminium for normal outdoor air, stainless steel for the treatment plant — with climate control and frost protection, IP54/55, ex works.

Enclosure technology for water engineering

Water moves around the clock — and with it the technology that conveys, lifts, measures and treats it. Pumping stations, lifting stations, well fields and treatment plants often operate their control and process technology directly on site, unprotected outdoors. There, the enclosure has to do more than just keep out the rain: it stands in permanently high humidity, in the splash zone and often in an aggressive atmosphere of sewer gases, chlorine or salt mist. Condensation on terminals and electronics is the silent cause of failure — as is corrosion, which makes a standard enclosure leaky over the years.

For this, ZPAS supplies weatherproof outdoor enclosures designed precisely for these conditions. The material follows the site: aluminium for normal outdoor air at pumping and lifting stations, stainless steel for the particularly corrosive environment at treatment plants, wells and near the coast. Single- or double-walled, with insulation against heat and frost, integrated climate control, ventilation and a thermostat-controlled heater — and because every site is different, every enclosure is made for the specific project: from series for network expansion to one-off custom designs with prepared cable entries, mounting plates and interior fit-out for frequency converters, PLCs and level control — direct from our own production.

Requirements in the water sector — clearly classified

The water and wastewater sector places its own demands on an outdoor enclosure. We implement them for the specific site and state openly what is standard and what is designed for the specific project:

Corrosion protection

Powder-coated aluminium for normal outdoor air; stainless steel 1.4301, 1.4404 on request, for aggressive media, salt mist and treatment plant atmospheres.

Condensation & frost protection

Double-walled version for thermal decoupling, thermostat-controlled heater against condensation and icing — keeps the controls above the dew point.

Climate control

Filter fans with weather protection hood, air/air or air/water heat exchanger, cooling unit or heat pump — matched to the heat load of the controls.

Protection & vandalism

IP 54 (IP 55 on request) according to EN 60529, impact resistance IK10 according to EN 62262 — for exposed, often freely accessible sites.

Pumping station, treatment plant, waterworks: the environment works against the technology

Water management installations combine two unfavourable factors: permanent moisture and — above all in wastewater — a corrosive atmosphere with hydrogen sulphide and cleaning chemicals. Standard steel enclosures age visibly fast here. That is why ZPAS relies on aluminium or stainless steel for this sector: aluminium for conventional outdoor installation at pumping stations and wells, stainless steel (1.4301) where aggressive media or hygiene requirements tip the balance. The corrosion protection guide explains the corrosivity categories according to EN ISO 12944.

The second perennial issue is condensation. Pump and process controls generate little heat of their own — at night the cabinet cools down, the humid air reaches the dew point, and water condenses on PLCs, terminals and transmitters. The solution is a thermostat-controlled enclosure heater, supplemented by the sealed housing (IP54/55) and, where necessary, the double-walled version, which keeps the inner wall warmer. Cooling, on the other hand, only becomes an issue with frequency converters for larger pump drives.

Then there is the location of the sites: pumping stations and stormwater overflow tanks are scattered, often unattended on the edge of town or in open country. The enclosure has to withstand vandalism (IK10, multi-point locking), house the telecontrol and communications technology for the control centre and be easily accessible for the service technician in any weather. Plinth mounting with cable entry from below has proven itself — also with heavy rain and short-term backflow in mind — as have prepared mounting plates for PLC, measurement technology and meter space.

Whether a single cabinet for a pressure booster system or a series for a refurbishment programme: ZPAS manufactures any special size direct from the factory. You can put together the basic design in the outdoor enclosure configurator.

Why ZPAS for water management

ZPAS is a European manufacturer of enclosure and cabinet systems with more than 50 years of experience and its own design department (80+ engineers). For municipal utilities, water associations and local authorities, this means: any special size, series or one-off, in the right material (aluminium or stainless steel) and with prepared equipment — climate control, frost protection, mounting frames and sealed cable entry from below — ready for operation ex works. You can put together your specific design — dimensions, material, degree of protection, climate control and accessories — in a few minutes in the outdoor enclosure configurator.

Frequently asked questions — outdoor enclosures for water management

Do I need stainless steel for the aggressive environment at treatment plants and wells?

For most pumping stations, powder-coated aluminium is the economical and permanently corrosion-resistant choice. In a permanently aggressive atmosphere — sewer gases, chlorine, salt mist or the direct splash zone at treatment plants and wells — we recommend the stainless steel version of the SZD (1.4301 / AISI 304, 1.4404 / AISI 316 on request). We select the material for each project according to the site and corrosivity category.

How are condensation and frost prevented in outdoor controls?

To prevent condensation on electronics and terminals, we combine several measures: a double-walled design for thermal decoupling, a thermostat-controlled heater to keep the temperature above the dew point and, where necessary, a heat exchanger or condensate drain. This keeps the controls dry and operationally reliable, even with temperature changes and frost.

Are the enclosures prepared for pump and PLC controls?

Yes. The interior fit-out is matched to your equipment: mounting plate, DIN rails, swing frame and sealed cable entries (membrane/ROXTEC) — prepared for frequency converters, PLC process control and level control. The plinth frame with cable entry from below protects against dust and rodents, especially at lifting stations and in shafts.

Which IP rating does an enclosure need at a pumping station, lifting station or treatment plant?

IP54 is the proven standard for permanent outdoor use; for sites exposed to water jets, we supply IP55. Also important are IK10 impact resistance against vandalism and a sealed plinth and cable entry concept from below. We match the degree of protection to the specific site.
