Server rack dimensions:
42, 45 and 47 U
Updated:
All standard dimensions of the ZPAS Z-SERVER, SZB IT and DSR IT server racks on one page: height in U and millimetres, width, depth, version number and load capacity — straight from the catalogue.
In short: a 19-inch server rack from ZPAS is 600 or 800 mm wide, 600 to 1,200 mm deep and has 18 to 47 rack units. A 42 U rack is 1,963 mm (SZB IT, DSR IT) or 2,000 mm (Z-SERVER) high. All values are taken from the version tables in the IT Solutions catalogue (pp. 10, 36, 41).
Server rack height by rack units
The height of a server rack is stated in rack units (U), 1 U = 44.45 mm. What matters for room height, doors and transport, however, is the frame height — it differs depending on the series:
| Rack units | Usable 19″ space | Z-SERVER | SZB IT | DSR IT |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 U | 800 mm | — | 896 mm | — |
| 24 U | 1,067 mm | — | 1,163 mm | — |
| 33 U | 1,467 mm | — | 1,563 mm | — |
| 42 U | 1,867 mm | 2,000 mm | 1,963 mm | 1,963 mm |
| 45 U | 2,000 mm | 2,100 mm | 2,096 mm | — |
| 47 U | 2,089 mm | 2,200 mm | 2,186 mm | 2,186 mm |
| 52 U | 2,311 mm | — | 2,408 mm (SZB IT-MAX) | — |
Frame height without plinth and castors. Usable space = U × 44.45 mm, rounded.
The tables show the version number — it is part of the catalogue number and encodes height, width and depth (e.g. 428012 = 42 U, 800 mm wide, 1,200 mm deep). A dash means: not available as a standard size in this series.
42 U server racks: all widths and depths
42 U is the most common height in data centres and server rooms — with a frame height of just under 2 m, the rack fits through standard doors and under suspended ceilings. All three series are available in 42 U.

42 U server rack, 800 × 1200 mm
Version 428012 is available as Z-SERVER, SZB IT and DSR IT: 800 mm width for lateral cable routing and PDUs, 1,200 mm depth for deep servers. The typical choice for data centres and GPU racks — the Z-SERVER carries 1,600 kg static on levelling feet and 2,000 kg without levelling feet.
42 U server rack, 800 × 1000 mm
Version 428010 saves 200 mm of depth and is also available in all three series — suitable for servers of medium depth and mixed server/network racks.
42 U server rack, 600 × 1000 mm
Version 426010 is the space-saving variant for long rows. For pure network equipment, the SZB IT is also available in depths of 600 and 800 mm (426060, 426080, 428060, 428080).

47 U server racks: all widths and depths
47 U gets five more rack units out of the same footprint than 42 U. The frame height is 2,186 mm (SZB IT, DSR IT) or 2,200 mm (Z-SERVER) — check door heights and the transport route before ordering.

47 U server rack, 800 × 1200 mm
Version 478012 is the largest standard version available in all three series — as Z-SERVER, SZB IT and DSR IT. The catalogue example of the Databox cold aisle containment uses exactly this size: twelve SZB IT 47 U, 800 × 1,200 mm.
Server rack with 52 U and 1,000 mm width: SZB IT-MAX
The SZB IT-MAX offers more than 47 U and more than 800 mm width: 52 U (frame height 2,408 mm) in 600, 800 and 1,000 mm width, plus 42, 45 and 47 U in 1,000 mm width — depths 600 to 1,200 mm, 23 standard sizes in total. The load capacity is 1,000 kg at 600/800 mm depth and 1,500 kg at 1,000/1,200 mm depth (profile rails 50–150 mm behind front and rear, load evenly distributed). 52 instead of 42 U means 24 % more installation space on the same footprint; to be stood upright in the room, the rack needs a room height of around 2.5 to 2.7 m, depending on depth.
Smaller floor-standing racks: 18, 24 and 33 U
For network and office equipment, the SZB IT is also available in lower heights — frame height 896 mm (18 U), 1,163 mm (24 U) and 1,563 mm (33 U):
| Height | 600 × 600 | 600 × 800 | 600 × 1000 | 800 × 600 | 800 × 800 | 800 × 1000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18 U | 186060 | 186080 | — | 188060 | 188080 | — |
| 24 U | 246060 | 246080 | 246010 | 248060 | 248080 | 248010 |
| 33 U | 336060 | 336080 | — | 338060 | 338080 | — |
Even smaller are the Z-BOX and Z-CUBE wall-mounted enclosures from 6 to 21 U. Which design suits network equipment is shown on the network cabinet page.
Load capacity by series
| Series | Permissible static load | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Z-SERVER | 1,600 kg on levelling feet 2,000 kg without levelling feet | Profile rails 50–150 mm from the front and rear, load evenly distributed (catalogue p. 10); castor set: 1,500 kg |
| SZB IT | 1,000 kg (depth 600/800 mm; depth 1,000/1,200 mm up to 24 U) 1,500 kg (depth 1,000/1,200 mm from 33 U) | On levelling feet, plinth or floor; on castors type 150: 150 kg, type 300: 500 kg (catalogue p. 36) |
Choosing the right width and depth
- Width 600 mm: saves space in the row, ideal for densely arranged server rows with cable routing via the roof or raised floor.
- Width 800 mm: space for vertical cable ducts and PDUs next to the 19″ frame; with the Z-SERVER, the rail spacing can be changed from 19 to 21 inches.
- Depth 600/800 mm: patch panels, switches, short devices — the classic network cabinet depth.
- Depth 1,000/1,200 mm: servers, storage and GPU systems with cables and power supplies at the rear.
You can put together the right rack with doors, side panels and accessories in the server rack configurator. For tenders, there is the specification text for server racks.
Frequently asked questions about server rack dimensions
How tall is a 42 U server rack?
At ZPAS, a 42 U rack has a frame height of 1,963 mm (SZB IT, DSR IT) or 2,000 mm (Z-SERVER). The usable 19″ space is 42 × 44.45 mm = around 1,867 mm high. A plinth or castors are added to the frame height.
What does U mean for a server rack?
U stands for rack unit (also RU; in German HE). One U measures 44.45 mm (1.75 inches). A 42 U rack therefore holds 42 devices of one rack unit each — or correspondingly fewer if devices occupy several U.
What depth does a server rack need for servers?
For servers, rack depths of 1,000 or 1,200 mm are usual, because space for connectors, cable bends and PDUs is needed in addition to the device depth. For pure network equipment, 600 or 800 mm is often enough. Z-SERVER and DSR IT are available in 1,000 and 1,200 mm, the SZB IT from 600 to 1,200 mm.
600 or 800 mm wide — which is better?
600 mm saves space in the row. 800 mm leaves room at the sides for vertical cable routing and PDUs; with the Z-SERVER in 800 mm wide racks, the spacing of the profile rails can also be changed from 19 to 21 inches. The SZB IT-MAX, at 1,000 mm wide, offers even more space at the sides.
Are server racks available in special sizes?
The standard dimensions cover 18 to 52 U — 52 U and 1,000 mm width are provided by the SZB IT-MAX. On a project basis, ZPAS also manufactures different versions, such as an SZB IT-MAX with 52 U and 700 × 1,400 mm for row installation. Special sizes are always costed per project.
